The Origins

The history behind the Simpsons Comics & how it all came about.

History Lesson...

Once upon a time, Steve and Cindy Vance introduced a magazine called the 'Simpsons Illustrated', which was published four times a year by a group called 'Welsh Publishing Group Inc'.

The Simpsons Illustrated was jam-packed with Simpsons content.

In January 1993, Steve and Cindy decided to stop making the magazine (Simpsons Illustrated) and formed Bongo Comics Group with their acquaintances, Matt Groening and Bill Morrison. The reason behind the axing of the magazine was because the fans loved the comics more then anything else that was featured in the Simpsons Illustrated. It made sense to deliver the fans exactly that, a 'comic book'.

They later all went to publish many series under the Bongo name, these are all the comics you have come to love today.

They included first 'Simpsons Comics & Stories' issue, they then moved off to the monthly series 'Simpsons Comics', followed by 'Bartman', 'Radioactive Man' and "Itchy and Scratchy Comics".

In 1995, 'Lisa Comics', 'Krusty Comics' and 'Bart Simpson's TreeHouse of Horror' were introduced.

1994 to 1999, selections from Simpsons Comics were printed in Disney Adventures, also Bongo Comics debuted their 'Simpsons Comic Strip' in January 1999 in 'The Times' as part of their Saturday 'Meg@' magazine.

The comic strips soon became weekly additions in over 50 newspapers in the U.S. alone and reaching an audience of about 14 million subscribers weekly, that's not including Australian newspapers or any other part of the world for that matter.

In the late 2000, after Bongo published 'Simpsons Comics #51', they decided to publish it from bi-monthly (occurring twice a month) to monthly.

In October 2000, Bongo released the first issue of 'Bart Simpson Comics', which is published four times a year.

As the continued success of these comics more comic series came out. Including 'Futurama' (which is also published four times a year), 'Futurama, Simpsons Infinity Secret Crossover Crisis' & 'Simpsons Super Spectacular'.

In 2005, Australia & New Zealand have had past comics re-issued that includes 'Bartman', 'Itchy & Scratchy', 'Lisa', 'Krusty' & 'The Best of' series (including Simpsons Comics & Bart Simpson comics) as special collectors editions. At similar times, 'Simpsons Classics' was introduced reprinting Simpsons Comics in a special digest size from the very first issue.

The Simpsons Comics continue to flourish as the years have been passing by with new series and special new issues continually to be developed as the years have gone by.
