Bartman #1                                                                                                                                                   Posted on August 9, 2005

It's Bartman, man! For some, they will be jumping for joy...For others, they will have the same face expression as Bartman shown on the actual cover art for this issue.

This is the first comic book to come out in the series and I'll say this now, it's not as strong as it could of been nor is it a stand out issue when you compare it to other premier titles in the whole Simpsons Comics collection.

The story doesn't actually tell you the origins of Bartman. However, it starts off as a normal tale. Bart, after receiving poor academic grades, has to come back for summer school.

Eventually as the story drags on, you come to find that 'error' comics have been selling to the public and Bartman is left to find the cause to stop the evil plot of the supply of these counterfeit comics.

The presentation of this comic just falls above average. Although it contains a great enhanced art cover, amusing opening message from Matt & Bart's bottom 40 list, it's not enough to hide the flaws of this publication. Speech bubbles are very tightly done, some of the text seem like they just fit. Lines that shouldn't appear in the speech bubbles are present, misspelling of the word TERM which appears as 'TER' and the overall drawings and fragments of dots really spoil the presentation. Not as polished as it should be.

Graphics, more negativity. Characters not drawn well, Martin looks 'funny' in some images, not consistent with the drawings, Troy McClure has dots in his eyes and is badly depicted and small traces of brunt pieces of ink happen to appear around the end of the comic. Instead of giving an explanation for each 'bad' point, I have simply listed them. Need I say why? I must say though, the colours are decent, again, not the best by any means. This issue does contain a nice 2 page view of Bartman leaving the tree house which is pleasant on the eyes.

Is this a jam packed hero adventure? Not at all. The story starts off slow. The jokes and humour used make you giggle, but nothing that would make you open your mouth for a good laugh.

It's a average story that will keep you reading to the end. It's not a poor comic, just not a spectacular one. It's a good tale about a super hero saving the day again and everything is right in the world.

This comic puts the bar back down. Issue #2 shouldn't have a problem exceeding this tale.
