What's
a precedent? If you don't know what a precedent is then you're
lucky I didn't say what's 'a verbis ad verbera'!
Some of you smart pants might know what both of the above terms
mean (the second is in Latin) which will slightly enhance your
reading pleasure while exploring through Simpsons Comic #107.
Just so you know, they are legal terms!
This issue contains a great cover art, it connects to the
storyline which I rate highly when it comes down to presentation
and it would have the average individual predicting it would be
something about the legal system.
The narration lifts off when Homer takes over Gil's Law degree
and practise, with this, Homer is left to take on cases that are
still outstanding. At length, one of The Simpsons bewilders into
trouble with the law and Homer, with little assistance, is left
to defend in court.
Not many stories would have a whole comic based on the court
system or even in the court room. Originality here (some will
always disagree) is considered but not enough to save it from a
linear approach where other comics in the series mark better.
Where presentation is concerned, the comic is not all that bad.
It contains an essential cover art that is well-done, ad's are
present but, again, wouldn't limit your experience of picking up
this issue and everything feels in working order. I do have to
mention, this issue does suffer from distributor errors, the
sides on the right where the cover has been cut is slightly
shorter when compared to the whole comic. This leaves the sides
of white pages showing moderately when the comic is closed. It
might not have happened to all comics, but it's present and
needs noting in-case others endured the same fate. However, this
issue compensates for minor errors where all boxes are in place
and nothing else contributes to the damaging incline factor.
There is nothing worse then opening a comic book and viewing
poorly drawn images of the characters... Don't worry, not this
time round, the comic has another factor in terms of colour
density!
Graphics! This is an exceptional example of how monthly comics
should be drawn, great character consistency and it really makes
the story much more enjoyable. What happened to the colours?
More then half the time nice bright colouring and inks are used
but quater of the comic suffers from really dark use of shades.
Most of the score was lost there! Maybe it's the style of how
Bongo wanted the comic to look or just me being picky, but while
comparing other bright complex colours used in this issue, you
can't help to think why wouldn't you make it default!
The write up needed just a
bit more substance... Storyline is solid indeed. When the comic
commences, a fair few one-liners are used, but really does
nothing for you. Few legal terms in Latin are present but can be
seen as both
a good or bad thing, it did help accumulate a gag. Considering
the tone and set for this issue is around the court and legal
system, most, if not all (a few exceptions) legal jargon is not
present which makes the comic that much more understandable.
To the credit of the story, the laughs do lift off...
Surpassingly, all the way to bring the score up.
In every aspect, the comic marks up pretty well, nothing
in this publication is disappointing, considering I reviewed
this 3am at night, it still managed to stop me from falling
asleep. Just, the story needed to take some risks which it
failed to do so, but all is well in The Simpsons world and it
stays true to it.
It's a solid release for a monthly issue but not as good
as previous comics in the series.
