Llyn-y-Fan Fach and the Bannau Sir Gaer Ridge

Family walk as far as Llyn-y-Fan Fach

Beyond this point is for the keen Fell Walkers only.


Follow the A40 west out of Brecon to

SENNYBRIDGE; TRECASTLE (Grid Ref.  SN 881291)

 

Go into village, round right bend then turn left by the hotel onto minor road

PONT AR HYDFER

 

From here on along this road there are fine views to your left looking over to:

CAMARTHEN FAN’ and ‘THE BLACK MOUNTAIN

Continue along this road to the village of

 

TALSARN (Grid Ref. SN 772259)

Turn left at Cross Roads, (opposite the Pub) following all road signs for

 

“Llyn-y-Fan Fach” (Probably signed: ‘Llyn-y-Fan’)

Follow down this narrow single-track road to a ‘T’ junction and turn left.

 

Keep to this winding, single-track road all the way for about another ¾ mile and turn left at junction near Youth Hostel.

 

Follow this road for about 1 mile then the road becomes a farm track.
Continue straight on, passing
 

Blaenau farmhouse.
 

Follow this track until you arrive at a gate with a 'Dwr Cymru' (Welsh Water) sign on it.
 

Turn right and cross over a narrow cattle grid and bridge.
 

Follow this track until just before the next bridge. 

Park your car on the pull off to your right. (Grid Ref. SN 799268)

 

You are not allowed to drive any further!


 

On foot, continue up the track until reaching the Dwr Cymru water treatment station.
There is a footpath through the wall on your left. 

Step through wall, turn right and follow the line of the wall until reaching the track on the far side of the water treatment station.

Continue on up this track all the way until reaching a ‘Dam’.  You are now at

 

Llyn-y-Fan Fach      (Grid Ref. SN 804220)
 

!This is the end of the Family walk!


For the keen walkers among you, at the right-hand end of the Dam wall there is a footpath leading up to the ridge.

Follow this up until you reach the ridge path near the summit of

Vaun Lefrith at 2,221 ft. (Grid Ref. SN 796210)

Turn left and follow onto the

 

Bannau Sir Gaer Ridge with Llyn-y-Fan Fach far below you.

 

Continue along this ridge path to

 

Fan Foel at about 2,600 ft. (Grid Ref. SN 242224)

 

The path now turns southeast, follow this and you will reach the summit of
 

Bannau Brecheiniog  (Brecon Fan) at 2,631 ft. (Grid Ref. SN 825217),
 

with the lake, Llyn-y-Fan Fawr some 500 feet below you.



Retrace you steps back to the car, the way you came.

Or if you wish for a slightly different route.

When you arrive near the summit of “Vaun Lefrith” (Grid Ref. SN 796210)

Instead of turning right and going back down to the ‘DAM’ at Llyn-y-Fan Fach, go straight on in a northerly direction, from here you can walk over the top of

Pant Tyle Gwyn, and then down to rejoin the road just below the bridge where you left your car.

“LLYN-Y-FAN FACH”               = 3 Miles          (Allow about 2 hours)
 

 

“FAN FOEL”                               = 9 Miles          (Allow about 3 to 4 hours)
 

 

“BANNAU BRECHEINIOG”   = 11 Miles       (Allow about 5 to 6 hours)
